I’m sure you’ve personally experienced the connection between your hormones and your mood. 🙋♀️It’s a thing, for sure. It just so happens that estrogen, which is high during the first half of your menstrual cycle and throughout pregnancy, is directly involved with the productions of serotonin aka your feel good neurotransmitter.
It’s almost never a simple answer. One of my biggest lessons in motherhood has been the ability to hold two very different feelings at the same time. “I love you with all my heart AND I just want 3 days to myself to especially not see you.”
What caused my PCOS? I’ve been thinking of root cause of PCOS a lot lately and truthfully, for everyone it’s different. It’s not only because of being overweight, eating too much sugar or stress but it always, always starts long before a diagnosis.
I have this conversation all the time in my office. It’s often the only option that is presented to a lot of women and it’s certainly the first so it’s like a major act of rebellion to choose that the pill or IUD is no longer the right option for you. On top of that, if you’ve been on hormonal birth control for some time, it might take some time and a little extra intention to bring your body back into balance.
I’m seeing a vast majority of client virtually these days and I’ve had a lot of questions about what it’s like to meet virtually, rather than in-person.
First of all, now is such a great time to address your health because there is an amazing opportunity to slow down right now. With as much conflicting information as there is out there, having a guide to individualize a plan that is made for you specifically is so, so important.
The word is out more than ever about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and for good reason with it being the most common chronic illness in women of reproductive years. You may have heard about it online or from a friend but how do you know if you have it? PCOS is diagnosed using what is called the Rotterdam Criteria and you basically need 2 out of the 3 criteria for a diagnosis.
Have you been having irregular or totally absent menstrual cycles? Maybe, hair loss or acne? Or maybe you’ve been trying to get pregnant for months and it’s just not happening. Or you’re worried about how easily you’ll be able to get pregnant in the future.
I know what that is like because I’ve been there, not to mention worked with so many women experiencing the exact same thoughts and symptoms.
Theoretically, we’ve all be waiting for this time to be able to do the things we don’t think we have time to do. Most likely, that has a lot to do with doing less. I’ve heard quite a bit of messaging out there to do more with this time. Start the business, create the thing, be productive still. And I would like to release some of that pressure so we can realize that this is the model that we’re trying to leave behind.
I was feeling it a little yesterday. Even with my feet firmly planted in the bigger picture (which I’m optimistic about), I recognized some fear in my body. My chest was a little tight and there was a little lump in my throat. That’s my pattern. It started when I read an article the night before that I knew was not the right choice just before bed but I did it anyway because I just had to know more.
I’m not going to update you on the status of COVID-19 because I’m sure you’re staying informed as well as possible but I’m preparing for a talk next week about things you can be doing to stay healthy, with the reminder that getting sick is also a great exercise for your immune system. Yes, this virus can be very serious for certain populations but mounting a solid immune response is essential for a properly functioning immune system throughout your life. That being said, here’s a simple list of the things you could be doing to support your immune system on a foundational level.
In the adrenal glands, cortisol is literally made from progesterone, which means if you’re experiencing stress at higher levels, your body has a great demand for cortisol, which will push progesterone towards that pathway rather than being available to balance your estrogen. This becomes even worse of an issue if you’re not ovulating, due to PCOS, hypothalamic amenorrhea or because of hormonal birth control.
I’ve posted about this before but I still see people all around me using sunscreen with toxic ingredients so I’m going to keep talking about it. This is super important now as you head off on your winter vacations, catch those blue bird days on the slopes or are extra extra ready for summer (if you’re in the Northern hemisphere).
Probably not your fav appointment you have on your schedule but usually a good idea to keep up with them anyway. I don’t perform annual exams in my office so I refer to trusted practitioners in my community. I just went in for an annual exam myself and realized it’s really important for YOU to be empowered with knowing whether or not you’re receiving an adequate and thorough exam.
There’s no one single remedy for fever in homeopathy. Like always with homeopathy, you need to understand the unique way a person has the fever. Did it come on all of a sudden? Was it after the person was exposed to a cold wind? Do they desire cool drinks or warm? All of these little details help select the remedy that best supports the individual experiencing the fever.
While it’s without a doubt more convenient to skip you period or bleed very lightly, the female body was designed to release (literally and energetically) each month, with the exception of pregnancy or menopause. Even in my practice I see many women who do “really well” on hormonal birth control, meaning they don’t experience the classic crazy, or the weight gain, or the headaches, etc. but they are still coming to see me for a reason that seems unrelated but often actually isn’t.
Most common question when I’m going over a wellness plan for a client.👆🏻 And well, the specifics of exactly what is happening with homeopathy on an energetic and cellular level have yet to be explained, just like so many of the pharmaceutical drugs used today! So, don’t let that deter you from its use because it’s gentleness and effectiveness has been witnessed for hundreds of years and I literally see it change lives in my practice all the time.
Did you know castor oil was found in Egyptian tombs? Truth! It’s been around for a while and is such an important part of my treatment plans. The number one benefit of topical castor oil is improving lymphatic drainage. We have 2-3 times as much lymph in our bodies as we do blood and it’s basically our sewer system. Waste from regular metabolism and detoxification is carried in the lymph to be removed from the system. When lymph is stagnant, we are literally sitting in our own waste. Yikes!
You know that. Maybe you have no trouble getting half your body weight in ounces per day and maybe you can go ALL day and not want a sip. First of all, I’d just like to de-villanize that phenomena. Your thirstiness if a part of your constitution, though a constitution likely at least a little out of balance if you really never want water. I pick remedies based on whether or not you’re thirsty. That is important for me to know. It tells me a lot. In balance, your body should naturally tell you to drink water. I love helping people get back to that place.
Hormones, Autoimmune, PCOS & Infertility
So maybe you've been tracking your cycle and you notice you have a short luteal phase, which is generally less than 10 days between ovulation and bleeding time, or you just had your progesterone tested and it came back low. It's possible your doctor recommended progesterone cream and maybe you're looking for other ways to increase your own production of progesterone. Here are my top progesterone production boosting tips!
Progesterone cream is often the recommendation when a woman has low progesterone. It's easy to find over the counter and it makes sense that if you're low in progesterone, it's probably worth supplementing. I like to take a few steps back from that thinking and consider why you might not be producing enough progesterone and start building up the system that way. Let's first take a look at what progesterone does for you body and why it's important.
A diagnosis of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis generally means supplemental thyroid hormone will be needed long-term but there are absolutely things you could be doing to reduce your antibody levels and keep you on the lowest possible dose necessary to feel well.
Recipes, Guides & More
Start looking for key signs of readiness in your child, such as teeth and the ability to sit on their own. If your babe is starting to show interest in food, like reaching, opening their mouths and looking like they want to have a bite of what you’re eating, it’s also a sign of readiness. These things generally start to show up somewhere between 5 and 7 months of age. That being said, I know kiddos that don’t get teeth until they are 16 months or more so you don’t need to have all these things in place in order to start solid foods.
Liver is one of the most nutrient dense foods out there! Full of B-vitamins, minerals, and protein, it’s a superstar food to include on a weekly basis. If you naturally love liver, I’m jealous! Pate and hiding it in meatloaves or other dishes is the only way I find it palatable. Most of the time, I’ll even buy the pate because I’d rather not prepare it myself. Or, at least that used to be the case. Enter this recipe. For whatever reason, I have no problem cooking up this pate and eating it straight away. It was even delicious warm. I know, I wasn’t expecting that either. I hope you love it as much as I do!
Whether you’re a local or visiting, Bend has a lot to offer when it comes to offering nourishing food and services that have your health in mind. Here’s a list of my favorite places in town to eat and spend time.
This is a super-quick and delicious meal if you're looking to pack in a ton a vegetables and healthy fats, while avoiding grains. You don't have to be completely avoiding grains in your diet to appreciate a grain-free meal from time to time and this one is really satisfying and easy to throw together on weeknights, when you're looking for something comforting, yet nourishing.
Granola for breakfast or an afternoon snack in the summertime is such a treat! But un-soaked and barely cooked oats can be tough on anyone, especially folks dealing with any kind of digestive weakness, which is common in chronic illness, pregnancy, and many functional health issues. I replace rolled oats with flaked coconut and came up with this grain-free granola recipe that will make your house smell amazing and keep your tummy happy. Plus, by ditching the oats, and adding extra nuts and seeds this granola is full of healthy fats, protein, vitamins and minerals. By using soaked and dehydrated or sprouted nuts and seeds, digestibility and bioavailability will be even greater.
